Short Story:
Ray Bradbury Award for Outstanding Dramatic Presentation
Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy Book
Solstice Awards were awarded to editor Ginjer Buchanan and astronomer and entertainer Carl Sagan, the latter of which was accepted by his son Nick Sagan. The Kevin O’Donnell Jr. Service Award was awarded to Michael Payne. (The list above borrowed from this Tor.com posting. You may also see results on SFWA’s own site.) Also, of course, we formally invested Gene Wolfe with the title of Grand Master. He was gracious and touching in his speech, which is of course no surprise at all. I am delighted to say that my final Nebula Award ceremony as president went along swimmingly, with Robert Silverberg as our emcee. I got to introduced Bob and give him some good-natured ribbing; he got up and dropped a house on me, which may go down as one of the highlights of my time as SFWA President. If you ever get a chance to get zinged by Grand Master Silverberg, I highly recommend it. Congratulations to the winners, commiserations to the other most worthy nominees, and many thanks to the volunteers and other who made the Nebula Ceremony, and indeed the entire Nebula Weekend, possible. It was a great time. As a fan, I was thrilled. As the President of SFWA, I was relieved. |

So... We tried. We tried to give the mallards the idea that this is not the ideal location. We even lit a fire to show them that yes, sometimes it gets smoky around here. Instead, they took a long parambulatory tour of the garden. All around the deck, through the alium, through the creeping hydrangea, the beds of poppy and bellflower, and the squill, taking care to trample everything to decide on its suitability for nesting material. They took all afternoon. Or should I say SHE did. He, like males everywhere, had already decided on the best place (behind the peonies, and in the shade of the water barrel). He sat there for half an hour, quacking for her to join him. As she parambulated some more, poking her bill into everything and sampling what was there. She eventually looked in on the spot he'd chosen, said "yes, very nice dear...", sat for a decent interval, and then moved on. Eventually, she decided on a place, no doubt cementing permanently her hubby's impression of her ![]() Yep. In the honeysuckle, right above the arch that bridges from the shed to the pool. Right next to where one set of grackles was already setting up shop. As you can see, Mrs. Grackle II took one look at the new situation and has been considering relocation. Here she is, arriving with new nesting material, just in time to meet the new neighbours: ![]() We are now considering getting hold of a used kiddie-pool and dumping the contents of the pool cover into it, should ducklings be the result. That is, if the eggs don't roll off. But seriously. On a roof? What was she thinking? |

Awake. Hungry. Still in shock that the Nebula Award on my table hasn’t done a vanishing act… This will be very brief as I need to pack before leaving for the airport, but wow. Apparently I looked grey for about 30 minutes after the awards were done, to the point where N.K. Jemisin very kindly badgered someone into brewing me orange herb tea (and I remembered the half-consumed bar of cereals in my bag). Pregnancy memo: NEVER ever forget your blood sugar levels… (also, that adrenaline rush that I was counting on to keep awake? I think the pregnancy hormones screw up with that…) If someone had told me I’d win a Nebula when I was younger and marvelling at all those books and short stories that had won the award… I would probably have laughed in their face, to be honest (which just goes to show how wrong you can be). Like I said yesterday, thanks to Neil Clarke, Sean Wallace and the rest of the team at Clarkesworld; to everyone who spread the word, nominated and voted for “Immersion”; to all my fellow nominees (it was a really strong ballot this year full of strong stories, and I wouldn’t have minded losing to anyone in my category!)–to Rochita Loenen-Ruiz, without whom this story wouldn’t have happened; and finally to my family–to Matthieu, my parents and sister, for putting up with me and my crazy ideas; and a particular thanks to my maternal family in Vietnam who made our visit there such a great experience, and planted the seeds of what would later become “Immersion”. Thanks I didn’t have I have to admit to some intellectual curiosity as to what other non-native Anglophones won a Nebula (I know about Italo Calvino, Johana Sinisalo, etc., but it looks like they were non-winning finalists?) My friend Helen Marshall has an ebay auction going on for a hardcover signed first edition of her debut book Hair Side Flesh Side>. I'm a little biased, but I think time will prove that she's one of the most talented Canadian SFF writers of this decade. CZP doesn't do first edition hardcovers anymore, either, and I think there were only about a hundred of these printed, or less. So, not only are you giving a talented young writer a boost, but you're probably going to get your money back as an investment, if you're into that whole "signed first edition hardback" thing. Helen was also an editor at CZP, and has an eye for talent. So, though I don't know Alex Kane myself, I'm dead certain that sending him to Clarion is a worthwhile endeavourtm. |

http://fantasyhotlist.blogspot.com/2013/0 Here's the blurb: Some feel the Lady, newly risen from centuries in thrall, stands between humankind and evil. Some feel she is evil itself. The hard-bitten men of the Black Company take their pay and do what they must, burying their doubts with their dead. Until the prophesy: The White Rose has been reborn, somewhere, to embody good once more. There must be a way for the Black Company to find her... So begins one of the greatest fantasy epics of our age—Glen Cook's Chronicles of the Black Company. |

This is your friendly Pacific Standard Time moderator here. I will more than likely be closing my Livejournal account within the next few days. I rarely use LJ any more. Which means, the time has come for me to bid you all a fond farewell. I had no idea that my crazy little idea for a community would take on a life of its own. Thanks to everyone for making this what it is. That Word Grrl |

http://fantasyhotlist.blogspot.com/2013/0 Hey guys! I'm catching a Paris-bound flight in a few hours! I'll be chilling out in the City of Light for 5 days before going to Barcelona for another 5 days. After which, I'll be spending a little over 2 weeks traveling around the Ukraine, where I'll hit the major spots such as Kiev, Lviv, and Odessa. Might even go down to Moldova for a couple of days! Next time you'll hear from me, I'll be in Paris! Don't be jealous, though, as the weather forecast is for dreary and rainy weather and cold temperatures for the duration of my stay. . . =( |
